How Darc AI works

Darc uses AI in two places: the "Ask Darc" chat (Darc AI), and sorting new bank transactions into spending categories. Here's what each one uses and does.

What Darc AI uses

  • Your weekly plan: money in, bills, commitments, debt, savings and spending limits.
  • Your recent transactions: merchant, amount, date and category.
  • Your balances, with account numbers shortened to the last few digits.
  • What you type in the chat.

It never gets your bank login or full account numbers. When Darc gives you its read on a spending category, it uses only the totals, not the merchants.

What Darc AI does

  • Answers questions about your spending, bills, debt and savings.
  • Explains why your number is what it is.
  • Suggests a plan when you want to pay off your cards, save for something, do both, build a cushion or make your money last.

It never changes your plan on its own

When Darc AI suggests a change, you see a card with the before and after, and three choices: Apply to my plan, Adjust first or Not now. Nothing changes until you confirm, and you can undo right after. Darc AI can't move money, recategorize your transactions or change your settings.

Sorting your transactions

When a new purchase arrives from your bank, Darc sends its merchant name, description, amount and your bank's category to AI to pick a spending category. If you've corrected a merchant's category before, up to 10 of those corrections (merchant and category) are sent too, so the result matches your choices. Income is never sent. Sorting can be wrong. You can move any purchase to another category in the app, and "Always put … in …" keeps that merchant in the category you chose in your plan.

Limits

  • It can be wrong. AI can misread a question or a transaction. Check anything important against your bank.
  • It isn't financial advice. It gives general information based on your data. It isn't a financial, tax or legal adviser.
  • It only knows what Darc knows. If a transaction hasn't reached Darc yet, Darc AI can't see it.

Anthropic

Both run on Claude, a model made by Anthropic. The information above is processed by Anthropic to generate replies and categories, and it is not used to train Anthropic's models. The Darc app keeps your recent conversations so you can pick up where you left off. See the Privacy Policy.

Turning it off

Go to Profile → Privacy → AI & communications and turn off AI coaching. Darc AI chat stops; your weekly plan, bank sync and everything else keep working. Transaction sorting is part of how Darc builds your plan, so it continues while your account is open.
